The Civil Guard investigates a person for causing a fire in the Cerro del Oro de Jumilla (16/07/2018)

The fire, which was active for almost 24 hours, burned more than eight hectares of scrubland and pine trees

The fire was caused by negligence

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in the framework of the operation 'BUEY', has clarified a forest fire that took place in the Cerro del Oro, municipal district of Jumilla, with the investigation of a person who has been instructed diligences as alleged perpetrator of forest fire crime.

On July 8, a forest fire took place in the Cerro del Oro de Jumilla area.

The members of the Fire Brigade, Forestry Brigades, Environmental Agents, Environmental Crimes Investigation Brigade, Mobile Meteorological Unit and Transmissions, Civil Protection, Local Police and Civil Guard, who, with terrestrial and aerial means, managed to control the fire, moved to the place. a few hours later, although it was not considered extinct until the next day, calcining more than eight hectares of scrubland and pine trees.

The fire occurred along with the popular Sierra del Buey de Jumilla, which together with Cerro del Oro, belongs to the Natura 2000 Network and is considered to be a SCI (Site of Community Importance).

Members of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Benemérita began the investigation to clarify the causes of the fire and, where appropriate, identify those responsible.

The investigations made allowed to determine the exact point of the start of the fire and to identify a person, who, when trying to incinerate some personal belongings in a land previously belonging to his family, presumably caused the fire.

The Civil Guards, after obtaining all the necessary evidence, have investigated the identified person, who has been instructed in proceedings as alleged perpetrator of crime against collective security-forest fire.

Prison sentence of one to five years and a fine of twelve to eighteen months

The crime of forest fire is included in the Criminal Code and its authors are the ones who set fire to forests or forest stands, which will be punished with prison sentences of one to five years and a fine of twelve to eighteen months.

The person investigated and the proceedings ordered have been made available to the Juzgado de Instrucción number 1 of Jumilla (Murcia).

Recommendations on fire prevention

Avoid forest fires.

Do not fire outside the places authorized for it and never in days of strong wind.

Make sure the fire is completely extinguished.

If you notice an uncontrolled fire or you are immersed in a dangerous situation call immediately the Civil Guard (062), or the competent Security Body in the area, or 112. If you are involved in a fire and especially if it is windy, it is best to always protect yourself in areas that are already burned.

Do not throw or leave waste or food or glass.

They pollute the natural environment, deteriorate the landscape, are dangerous for animals and can cause or aggravate forest fires.

Avoid throwing cigarettes, garbage and, especially, glass bottles that make magnifying effect with the sun.

Negligence causes a lot of forest fires.

Camp only in authorized areas, since these have protective measures against a possible fire and evacuation is easier

In case of fire:

Try to gather all the information sufficient to locate the focus.

Indicate in your notice the most suitable way to arrive, taking into account where the fire is going.

Never act for free, submit to the orders of the technicians and personnel that directs the operations.

Any person who notices the existence or initiation of a forest fire shall be obliged to notify the competent authority or the emergency services and, where appropriate, to collaborate, within its means, in extinguishing the fire.

If you are surprised by a fire, avoid entering the forest or woods.

Always go through areas of high visibility and free of fuel.

In case of emergency due to forest fire, always follow the instructions of the competent authorities.
