The historic Cross Fiestas del Vino de Jumilla celebrates 40 editions on August 15 (02/08/2018)

With the edition to celebrate on the morning of August 15, the Jumilla Wine Fest Urban Cross will celebrate forty editions, being one of the tests of this modality of greater antiquity in the Region.

It is being held uninterrupted since 1979, always organized by the Department of Sports, formerly Board.

The registration period to participate in the fortieth edition is open and can be made effective on the web www.intercrono.es at the price of 7 euros (up to August 13) and free of charge for the prebenjamín, benjamín, alevín and infantil categories .

The first nine editions were held on August 16, which at that time used to be a local holiday.

In 1988, the test was transferred to August 15, date in which it is being carried out since then.

Until 1990 the start and finish was installed at the door of the City Hall with a circuit that ran through the Old Town with Canovas and Calvario streets as main arteries.

It was already in the 1991 edition when it moves to Reyes Católicos Avenue, next to the entrance of the then recently built Municipal Sports Pavilion, from where it is currently held.

84 boys and 4 girls, starting line of 1984

The first editions had a little more than fifty participants, mostly of local origin.

Over the years the race became popular and was marked in the calendar of popular tests for athletes from outside the town, arriving to have economic awards for the best classified.

In 1984 took part 88 runners, with a starting line in which there were barely four females.

The participation was increasing, surpassing the 300 athletes in several occasions, being the average number of participation for quite some time.

The podium of absolute category of the tenth edition (1988) was formed by Manuel Fernández López, Antón Gómez Iniesta and Pascual Abad.

In the twentieth edition (1998) the winner was Francisco Javier Gómez, from Almansa, with a prize of 40,000 pesetas (240 euros).

Rafael López and Alicia Vázquez are the current absolute winners, last year 2017.
