Tasting of the 25th anniversary of the Jumilla PDO quality contest (28/11/2019)

The skylight of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has received today, November 28, the commemoration tasting of the 25th anniversary of the DOP Jumilla Wine Quality Contest.

It was at the end of 1994 that the Jumilla PDO Regulatory Council, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, launched its first Quality Contest, pioneer in Spain of official wine competitions.

His career throughout these years has been a continuous growth both in the number of wine samples and their quality.

During the 25th anniversary commemoration, Mr. Silvano García, Chairman of the Regulatory Council of the PDO Jumilla and the General Director of Food Industry, Mr. José Miguel Herrero Velasco, took the floor.

During the development of the presentation, videos were watched that reminded of the trajectory of these 25 years as well as the mechanics of conducting the Quality Contest.

Next, Ms. María Quílez, sommelier formed with a PDO scholarship at the Basque Culinay Center presented four wines that have obtained the gold medal in different categories of the Contest in recent years, represented in the San Dionisio, Bleda wineries. Alceño and Silvano García.

The Monastrell variety, base of the great wines of this historic PDO, was one of the great protagonists.

The event was attended by personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, specialized press and wine prescribers, winemakers, local authorities from both the Region of Murcia and the province of Albacete, as well as numerous actors from the world of wine, sommeliers, distributors, and members of professional associations, which after the tasting closed the event enjoying a cocktail in which wines from wineries Luzón, Pío del Ramo, Carchelo, Juan Gil, BSI, Torrecastillo, Viña Elena and 1890, with their respective brands of award-winning wines in the history of the contest.

Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin wines have been developing, in recent years, a real revolution.

New elaborations, centered, the majority, in the original and very Mediterranean variety Monastrell, that give wines with elegance, claw and structure, but at the same time, fresh, balanced and very alive.

This quality is allowing to obtain such good results, that at present the Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin is being considered one of the most demanded of the Spanish wine scene, with excellent results both in the national market and in the international market.

That is why they want to make their latest and original innovations reach the professional sector in Madrid.

This action is the starting signal for a week of promotional actions whose main action will be the DOP Jumilla Professional Wine Salon with the presence of 20 wineries, next Monday, December 2, in the Granados Hall of the InterContinental Hotel in Madrid, with opening hours. 12 to 15 hours and from 17 to 21 hours.
