Information on organic wines DOP Jumilla (14/04/2020)

The Jumilla PDO is a pioneering area in the ecological certification of its vineyards and its wines.

Some wineries are accredited by control bodies since the beginning of organic certification in viticulture in Spain.

The certified ecological surface data indicates that more than half of the vineyard in the area is certified.

In the municipality of Jumilla, which accounts for 40% of the registered vineyard, according to data from the Committee for Ecological Agriculture of the Region of Murcia (CAERM), 97% of the vineyard is certified.

In the municipalities of the Jumilla PDO belonging to the province of Albacete (Hellín, Tobarra, Ontur, Albatana, Fuenteálamo and Montealegre del Castillo) the approximate proportion of organic vineyards is close to 40%.

In summary, around 65% of the Jumilla PDO vineyard is organic, and in the case of the municipality of Jumilla, practically 100%.

Regarding certified organic wine, there is a clear commitment by the PDO Jumilla wineries for this market, more than half of the registered wineries are certified and sell organic wine.

In some cases, up to 100% of the wines have organic certification, in other cases they have already exceeded 50%, and the general trend is that more and more bottles of organic Dop Jumilla wine are marketed.

In 2018, close to 10 million bottles of organic Jumilla DOP wine were marketed, which represents a third of the total commercialization.

Jumilla is a strongly internationalized PDO, with more than 65% of the wine sold outside our borders and in high-value markets and growing demand for organic products such as Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, so the wineries are taking advantage of its presence in these markets to increase their share of organic wine and add consumers.

The national market for organic products is less developed, in general, than that of other European markets or third countries, but it is a growing niche and where Jumilla PDO wines have positioned themselves very well from the beginning, being very easy find them in specialized stores, even on supermarket shelves.

It is one of the most visible Spanish PDOs within the organic wine market in Spain.

All this is possible thanks to the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Jumilla PDO, which are very favorable for the practice of organic farming.

The limestone and stony soils, the continental dry climate, with cold winters and very hot summers, and the high thermal gradient favor the good sanitary state of the vineyard throughout its vegetative cycle.

All this, together with scarce rainfall, less than 300 mm / year, and the type of cultivation mainly rain-fed and in glass, with low yields, make the use of plant protection products minimal.

The use of copper compounds is common in the area but the frequency of passes is low, in many cases once a year, as well as the doses used.

Furthermore, the recent extension by the European Commission to continue authorizing the use of copper in organic viticulture for 7 more years, offers a wide margin to analyze and test alternatives to copper in the future.
