The Monastrell Pie Franco of the Jumilla PDO is the protagonist in the sixth tasting of the convinamiento (20/04/2020)

| The gold-nosed sommelier Pedro Martínez will be in charge of guiding the tasting on Facebook this Friday, April 24 | One of the most important differences in the PDO Jumilla, is given by the presence in its fields of pre-phylloxeric Monastrell vines, showing that the vine has been cultivated in this territory since time immemorial.

Thanks to the characteristics we have: orography, soils, and climate, the spread of the phylloxera that attacks the roots of the vines, failed to spread in Jumilla, as it did elsewhere.Monastrell is a survivor in this territory and that is why know-how and tradition are deeply rooted.

That is something that is appreciated when we drink Dop Jumilla Monastrell wines, with an intense character, weight in the mouth, they are tasty wines and compensated with good acidity; enveloping and seductive. The free standing wines have become true jewels of the oenological world due to their uniqueness and quality.

In the Jumilla PDO there are several wineries that produce magnificent wines from vines standing frank, most of them very old Monastrell vines, with low yields, but of high quality. As part of our tasting program, this Friday, the sommelier from Murcia, Golden Nose 2001, Pedro Martínez, will offer an online tasting from the profile of the PDO Jumilla: "@vinosjumilla" that will turn on PIE FRANCO WINES.

THE PREFILOXÉRICA MONASTRELL IN THE DOP JUMILLA.

These are pure Monastrell vineyards, without grafting: "It is 100% Monastrell from root to grape." Pre-phylloxera strains that sink their roots in limestone soils caressing the bedrock. The wines to be tasted will be:CLÍO 2017, BY BODEGAS EL NIDOOLIVARES CRIANZA 2016, BY BODEGAS OLIVARESSILVER SHIELD RESERVE 2014, BY BODEGAS FERNÁNDEZCASA CASTILLO PIE FRANCO 2014, DE BODEGAS CASA CASTILLOSixth online tasting #Convinate with JumillaPedro Martínez will begin his tasting after 8:00 pm next Friday, April 24, after applause for the toilets. The tasting, which will review the characteristics of the Jumilla PDO and its singularities, will last approximately an hour, and people who follow it live will be able to ask questions that the sommelier will answer live.Likewise, the tasting will be available on the Facebook channel of the DOP Jumilla (@vinosjumilla), where it will be available later.Right now, we already have 5 tastings available on that channel, so that all those interested can see them and learn. As announced, the tastings will take place every Friday for the duration of the quarantine that forces all Spaniards to stay at home, and will be broadcast live on the DOP Jumilla Wine channel on Facebook (@VinosJumilla).About the Protected Designation of Origin JumillaThe Protected Designation of Origin Jumilla has a winemaking tradition that dates back to the remains of vitis vinifera along with utensils and archaeological remains- found in Jumilla originating in the year 3,000 BC, being the oldest in Europe. The production area is delimited, on the one hand, by the extreme southeast of the province of Albacete, which includes the municipalities of Montealegre del Castillo, Fuente Álamo, Ontur, Hellín, Albatana and Tobarra; on the other, the north of the province of Murcia, with the municipality of Jumilla.

An area characterized by large valleys furrowed by mountain ranges of up to 1,380 m.

A total of 17,000 hectares of vineyard, mostly rain-fed, cultivated in glass, and located on predominantly limestone soils, at altitudes ranging from 320 to 900 meters. The climate of this area is continental with influence from the Mediterranean.

The scarce rainfall that barely reaches 300 mm a year and the more than 3,000 hours of sun, favor the low incidence of pests and diseases, allowing a high percentage of organic cultivation. In the Jumilla PDO five kinds of wine are produced: red, rosé, white, sweet and liqueur wines, and the production of indigenous varieties prevails.

The Monastrell grape is the base for 70% of the wines produced in this Protected Designation of Origin.
