The Department of Environment reminds citizens that during the months of June, July, August and September, the use of sewage sludge or any animal manure as agricultural fertilizer is prohibited, since it negatively affects the quality of life, causing, in in some cases, unpleasant smells and the proliferation of flies and mosquitoes, especially when the agricultural practice is not done correctly.
This action is being carried out during the last years in different plots of the municipal term of Jumilla because the treatment plants produce thousands of tons of sludge with a high fertilizing power, usable as an amendment to the soil given its richness in organic matter and nutrients.
As every summer, from Environment of the City of Jumilla it is recalled that this fact is collected as a very serious infraction and that it can be sanctioned with a fine of 3,000 euros.However, during this summer period and to dispose of the sludge generated by the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, an exhaustive study has been carried out by the municipal technicians of the parcels of the municipality in which sludge can be poured without putting endangered the public health of the citizens of Jumilla, taking into account that they are as far from any home.
As reported by the Councilor for the Environment, Juan Gil, as in previous years, instructions have been given to Seprona, the Local Police, Environmental Agents and the Technical Service for the Environment of the City Council, to be especially jealous in compliance of this ordinance.The mayor has thanked the citizens in advance for: "They strive in their spirit of civic participation", adding that "if any neighbor suffers discomfort due to possible spillage of mud, let this City Council know for its effects and timely considerations."
