Six gold and one silver make the Jumilla PDO stand out in the Baco 2019 awards (07/07/2020)

| Two sweet Monastrell wines, one Verdejo and four Monastrell reds make it one of the five most awarded | The Jumilla PDO celebrates the good reception of its 2019 vintage wines in the awards of the Spanish Union of Tasters, accumulating seven medals, six of them gold, and the recognition of the sweet wine Silvano García sweet Monastrell as the most valued in the competition. The SAT Venta de las Cuevas winery, in Montealegre del Castillo, wins two awards, one gold for Torrepechi Verdejo and one silver for Torrepechi Monastrell.

With this gold, a young Verdejo reflects the potential of this variety, which has convinced the jury with a very outstanding profile.

The Torrepechi Monastrell joins the Prisma Organic Monastrell wines from Paco Mulero, Evol from Elisa Martínez, and SF Monastrell from Bodegas San Dionisio in Fuente Álamo, to give a good example of the great potential and growing acceptance of Monastrell's elaborations among the members of the Spanish Union of Tasters and the general public. Silvano García Dulce Monastrell wine, the best valued sweet wine in the competition, but it is not the only sweet that wins a gold medal in this contest.

The sweet Amatus from Bodegas Bleda also stands out with a golden award. The sweet wines of the PDO Jumilla stand out for their acidity and tannins together with an explosion of fruit and aromas that makes them one of the best liqueur wines in Spain.

Very versatile, they are ideal for appetizers and desserts, but also ideal combinations with creative dishes, such as duck, apple and of course, cocktails. A wine that is not made every vintage, and is only made when the ripening conditions of the grapes have been optimal. Journalists, sommeliers, winemakers, communicators, purchasing managers and hospitality and distribution professionals were in charge of assessing in strict blind tasting more than 570 references registered in this contest that celebrates its 34th edition, and was held last June in Madrid. These awards and the winning wines constitute a great showcase for young wines from Spain and boast an excellent vintage, backed by an independent and prestigious label such as the Spanish Union of Tasters. About the Protected Designation of Origin Jumilla The Protected Designation of Origin Jumilla has a winemaking tradition that dates back to the remains of vitis vinifera along with utensils and archaeological remains- found in Jumilla originating in the year 3,000 BC, being the oldest in Europe. The production area is delimited, on the one hand, by the extreme southeast of the province of Albacete, which includes the municipalities of Montealegre del Castillo, Fuente Álamo, Ontur, Hellín, Albatana and Tobarra; on the other, the north of the province of Murcia, with the municipality of Jumilla.

An area characterized by large valleys furrowed by mountain ranges of up to 1,380 m.

A total of 17,000 hectares of vineyard, mostly rainfed, cultivated in glass, and located on predominantly limestone soils, at altitudes ranging from 320 to 900 meters. The climate of this area is continental with influence from the Mediterranean.

The scarce rainfall that barely reaches 300 mm a year and the more than 3,000 hours of sunshine, favor the low incidence of pests and diseases, allowing a high percentage of organic cultivation. In the Jumilla PDO, five types of wine are produced: red, rosé, white, sweet and liqueur wines, and the production of indigenous varieties prevails.

The Monastrell grape is the base for 70% of the wines produced in this Protected Designation of Origin.
