| A panel of 12 expert tasters will select the best wines from the Dop Jumilla in Madrid | There are few days left for the annual tasters meeting around the Jumilla PDO wines that will compete, this year and as an exceptional circumstance in Madrid, on July 15 and 16.

Due to the special circumstances in which Spain finds itself, it has been decided that the Regulatory Council team, headed by its president, Silvano García Abellán, should be the ones to move.The Regulatory Council DOP Jumilla today announces its tasting panel, which has been reduced to comply with the capacity restrictions imposed in the COVID anti-contagion protocol.

The panel is made up of sommeliers, journalists and wine critics based in Madrid:Raúl Revilla, sommelier from Zalacaín.Custodio Zamarra, master sommelier.Fernando Gurucharri, President of the Spanish Union of Tasters.Andrés Proensa, Director of Planeta Vino and Guía Proensa.Mara Sánchez, journalist and wine critic for various media.Raúl Serrano, Director of the tasting panel of the Vivir el Vino publication.Amaya Cervera, taster and director of Spanish Wine Lover.José Luis Casado, tasting director of Sobremesa magazine.Jaime Bermúdez, director of Vinoselection.Mª José Huerta, sommelier at the Paco Roncero Restaurant in El Casino de Madrid.Antonio Candelas, editor in chief of the publication Mi Vino.Paco Abellán, taster member of the UEC.This year a record number of wines presented to the contest has been reached, with more than 200 wines that will compete in a rigorous blind tasting system, at the headquarters of the Spanish Union of Tasters, with all the guarantees of safety and social distance of tasters and personal.The tastings will take place on July 15 and 16, between 9 am and 2 pm, at the headquarters of the Spanish Union of Tasters; C / Lope de Vega, 27.

The awarded wines will be announced on Thursday, July 16, once the tastings are finished and the counts are done.Silver and gold medals will be awarded to all wines that meet sufficient scores within their categories, which are as follows:White wines.Rosé wines.Red wines made without contact with wood (vintages 2018 and 2019).Red wines made in contact with wood (vintages 2018 and 2019).Red wines made in contact with wood (2017 and previous vintages).Crianza Red Wines.Red Wines Reserve and great reserve.Sweet and liqueur wines.One of the novelties of this 26th edition is the Special Mention for the Best Organic Wine, with which it seeks to reinforce the important production of organic wines of the Jumilla PDO.

Thus, a special mention will be given to the best rated organic wine of the Contest, while the two special mentions to Monastrell wines, made with and without contact with wood, vintages 2018 and 2019 are maintained.About the Dop Jumilla Wines Quality ContestThe 2020 DOP Jumilla Wine Quality Contest celebrates its 26th edition in 2020, making it one of the oldest in Spain, recognized since its inception by the Ministry of Agriculture, to highlight the quality wines that are bottled in the Dop Jumilla .At present, this Contest is the reflection of the Jumilla PDO, since practically all the wineries of the Denomination participate on time.

Historical figures have been recorded in terms of samples presented, which, over two days of tasting, are examined by a panel of 12 expert tasters.

This fact endows the Contest with its own identity since the tasting panel's judgment is an accurate reflection of the market's demands for quality.The main objective of this Contest is to highlight the quality elaborations of the Jumilla PDO and add prominence to the authentic queen of this territory, Monastrell, and organic cultivation, which in the Jumilla PDO represents practically the total production.
