Full of medals for the organic wines of the PDO Jumilla (10/09/2020)

| 2 golds, 11 silver and 4 bronzes certify that the organic wines in Jumilla are of quality | The British publication The Drink Business, awarded 17 organic wines of the Jumilla PDO last month in its Global Organic Masters Competition, the annual competition to evaluate exclusively organic wines from around the world.

A jury led by Master of Wine Patrick Schmitt assesses samples from countries such as Argentina, Australia, Chile, Italy, France or Spain in blind tasting, classifying them by type of wine and average price. This is the first time that the Jumilla PDO has sent samples of organic wines to The Global Organic Masters competition, which is held annually in London, and there is no doubt that these wines were of interest to the tasting jury. The Master of Wine Patrick Schmitt valued very positively all the wines sent to this competition, and 100% of the wines presented received a medal.

The Jumilla wines also receive a mention for their excellent value for money.

"You shouldn't turn your back on organic wine if you have a tight budget," he says in his chronicle about the winners, "the range of reds from Jumilla is top quality; powerful tannic wines, which use the resistant Monastrell grape, a finding remarkable for those who want a red rich in red and black fruits ".

Given their high interest, months later this Master of Wine visited the Jumilla PDO, as we have already described previously. This editorial, which sends news to more than a million people daily and publishes a specialized magazine, publishes the ranking of the winning wines in its September issue.

The list of winners for the DOP Jumilla wines presented is as follows:Gold medal:Alceño Organic 2018, Bodegas AlceñoTerraje 2018, Parajes del Valle Wineries and VineyardsSilver medal:Luzón Verde Organic Blanco 2019, Bodegas LuzónPacheco Monastrell Organic 2019, Bodegas Viña ElenaHonoro Vera Organic 2019, Bodegas Juan GilLuzón Verde Organic 2019, Bodegas LuzónVerdecillo No Added Sulphites 2019, Bodegas LuzónVerdecillo Organic & Vegan 2019, Bodegas LuzónEYA 2019, Bodegas Carchelo3015 Finca Bacara 2019, Ego BodegasGoru Organic 2019, Ego BodegasOntalba Monastrell Syrah 2018, Bodegas OntalbaTalent Eco by Ego 2019, Ego BodegasBronze medal:Ontalba Sauvignon Blanc 2019, by Bodegas OntalbaCarchelo Rosé 2019, by Bodegas CarcheloPure Red Letter Organic NSA Monastrell 2019, Bodegas BSIPata Negra Passionate Organic 2018, Bodegas 1890 J.

García CarriónThe positioning in quality organic wines of the PDO Jumilla is high, since this Denomination of Origin provides the ideal agroclimatic conditions for the practice of organic farming.

The calcareous and stony soils, the dry continental climate, with cold winters and very hot summers, and the high thermal gradient favor the good health of the vineyard throughout its vegetative cycle.

All this, together with low rainfall, less than 300 mm / year, and the type of cultivation mostly rainfed and in glass, with low yields, mean that the vast majority of the vineyards in the Jumilla PDO are certified organic. There is a clear commitment by the wineries of the Jumilla PDO towards the organic wine market, and the general trend is that more and more bottles of organic Jumilla PDO wine are being sold.

Being a strongly internationalized PDO, with more than 65% of the wine sold outside our borders and in high-value markets and growing demand for organic products such as Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, the wineries take advantage of their presence in these markets to increase its share of organic wine and add consumers. In the national market, the organic wines of the Jumilla PDO have positioned themselves very well, being very easy to find them in specialized stores and supermarket shelves.

It is one of the most visible Spanish PDOs in the organic wine market in Spain, which maintains its growth niche.
