Jumilla will celebrate the European Day of Prehistoric Rock Art with the placement of a banner on the balcony of the Town Hall (07/10/2020)

The event will be held this Friday and on Saturday a commemorative plaque will be delivered in Calasparra to the mayors of those municipalities in the Region that have Rock Art in their municipal area, included within the UNESCO list as World Heritage To commemorate the European Day of Prehistoric Rock Art, which is celebrated this Friday, October 9, the Association of Friends of Rock Art of the Region of Murcia has organized several events.

On Friday morning banners alluding to these artistic manifestations will be placed on the balconies of the town halls or museums of the eleven municipalities of the Region of Murcia that have Prehistoric Rock Art in their municipal area.

In Jumilla the placement of its corresponding banner is scheduled at 9.30 am.

Likewise, banners will be displayed at the Government Delegation, at the University, Campus de la Merced and at the Archaeological Museum of Murcia. On Saturday 10, in the Shelters of El Pozo de Calasparra, located next to the Segura River, another institutional act will be held in which a commemorative plaque will be delivered to the mayors of those municipalities in the Region of Murcia that have in their Municipal term Rock Art, included within the UNESCO list as World Heritage, which are: Calasparra, Cieza, Jumilla, Moratalla, Mula and Yecla, to conclude with a guided visit to the shelters. From the Association of Friends of Rock Art of the Region of Murcia, it has wanted to highlight the cultural importance, historical significance and socio-educational possibilities of Prehistoric Rock Art, celebrating one of these events on the European Day of Prehistoric Rock Art, marked thus by the Council of Europe, which in turn has recognized and promoted the Network of Prehistoric Rock Art Roads, included among the European Cultural Roads. Prehistoric Rock Art is the first artistic manifestation of Humanity.

Aware of this, there are numerous large groups of shelters and caves with Rock Art that UNESCO has declared World Heritage, among them that of the Mediterranean Arch of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Region of Murcia is included, and therefore Jumilla, with three of the thirteen stations that it has with prehistoric pictorial manifestations: Cueva del Peliciego, Abrigos del Buen Aire and Abrigo del Canto Blanco.
