The Civil Guard dismantles a criminal group dedicated to the theft of copper in Jumilla (05/02/2018)

Eight people, one of them minors, have been arrested as alleged authors of at least four crimes of burglary and property damage

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, within the 'Plan against the theft of copper cable' and in collaboration with the Local Police of Jumilla, has developed the Operation 'ESCRAPER', which has culminated with the arrest of the eight members of a criminal group, one of them a minor, for the alleged responsibility for the continued crimes of robbery with force and copper theft in homes and industries in Jumilla.

The investigation began when the owner of an industrial building, located in the municipality of Jumilla, filed a complaint with the Civil Guard about the theft of a large volume of copper cable.

Days later, the Benemérita was informed of the event that occurred in a building in Jumilla, which had to go several fire departments alerted by neighbors in the area by an emanation of gas.

Explosion risk in a Jumilla building

The Civil Guard found out that the leak occurred after several copper pipes were ripped off, without closing the gas supply shut-off valve, which caused a serious risk of explosion.

In line with these two facts, the researchers learned of two more robberies, committed in a house and an industrial warehouse, which were robbed of metallic materials.

In the ocular inspection of the buildings, the presence of padlocks was detected in the access doors, placed after the robberies were committed, reason why it was suspected that the thieves had planned to return to remove the rest of the materials.

The Civil Guard, in collaboration with the Local Police of Jumilla, established a series of police devices aimed at preventing thefts and locating the suspects, which were positive when a local police patrol identified several people when they transported several heaters and pipes.

With this information, the researchers inspected several Waste Management Centers where the transactions of purchase and sale of this type of material were analyzed, in one of which, located in Jumilla, a large part of the stolen objects was located.

It is about half a ton of copper, lead and scrap material from theft in four buildings in the area, with a value close to 5,000 euros, which has been recovered.

The operation 'SCRAPER' has culminated with the arrest of eight people, one of them minors, alleged members of a criminal organization dedicated to the theft of copper and ferrous material, as well as the recovery of half a ton of copper, lead and scrap metal.

Distribution of criminal tasks

The investigation carried out has shown that it is a criminal group, specialized in copper theft, with the criminal tasks distributed among its members, some responsible for the materialization of thefts and others for the transport and sale of the goods.

The arrested men, aged between 18 and 52 years old, Spaniards and residents of Jumilla, the recovered effects and the diligences instructed have been made available to the Juzgado de Instrucción number 2 of Jumilla (Murcia).
