Declared a Cultural with paleontological area category saw the site of the Goats in Jumilla (28/09/2012)

The Governing Council approved the declaration of a Cultural, with paleontological zone category for the site of the Sierra de las Cabras, in Jumilla.

The site, located on the slopes of the Sierra de Cabras, seven kilometers west of the town of Jumilla, was discovered in 2007 by geologist Emilio Herrero, who put it raised its great scientific interest.

The rocks containing fossil footprints are very thin layers of limestone alternating with thin layers of marl, a substrate which formed the bed of a lake in the late Miocene period, about five million years.

Around it developed algae-statured plants that left the imprint of his roots.

Likewise, animals who came to drink the lake in search of prey or treading on sediment squishy its banks and left traces of their tracks.

Thus, the site has provided a total of 225 prints produced by different animals in motion.

Its well-preserved footprints allowed to attribute to mammals and waterfowl.

Herbivores have preserved traces of rhino, Hyperion (small prehistoric horses), wild boar and sitatunga, also known as the marsh antelope.

Also found bear tracks and some species of tiger, called a 'saber tooth'.

Especially interesting is the trace of elongated strokes that follow the same direction and whose identification has not yet been resolved by the specialists.
