Jumilla Presented at the Science City Project (06/11/2015)

The Superior Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Obra Social La Caixa and the City of Jumilla have launched the Science City location (www.ciudadciencia.es) a science project that is known firsthand today science and technology.

The mayor, Juan Guardiola, project coordinator Area of ​​the CSIC Scientific Culture, Carmen Guerrero and the director of the Business Area Cieza CaixaBank, Rosa Rios, have this morning the project to the media at the Cultural Center Roque Banos.

Science City offers the member cities to this scientific outreach program in multiple formats (exhibitions, conferences, visits to research centers, etc.) that are incorporated into the cultural program of each municipality and online participation workshops citizen created by researchers at the CSIC.

The workshops cover various topics and enable citizens to make a map of your city or plants to create a garden in which to learn, through the scientific method, concepts of sustainable agriculture.

Juana Guardiola has highlighted the opportunity of participating in Jumilla Science City, as "from now Jumillano can see first hand the work of professionals in the scientific community through a range of activities for all ages ".

The mayor also praised the work of both the CSIC and the Obra Social La Caixa.

Carmen Guerrero has noted that: "We try to create an environment of dialogue with the scientific community to discuss, learn, participate and enjoy learning about science and technology from the interests and resources in each locality".

For his part, Rosa Rios, recalled that "bring science to society is one of the priorities of the Social La Caixa work and collaboration with the CSIC can reinforce the objectives of both institutions."

In Jumilla, the second city of Murcia to adhere to Science City with Alhama, the project begins with the conference 'Nanotechnology applied to medicine: the strength of small', by María del Puerto Morales, researcher at the Institute of Science Materials of Madrid (CSIC).

On Wednesday November 11, the researcher will talk with Archbishop Lozano IES students on the potential of nanotechnology, a very powerful tool that is transforming society and causing a revolution in many fields such as medicine.

The talk will take place at this school, but is open to anyone interested.

Science City was launched in March 2012 and currently has more than 30 participating locations located throughout Spain.

Throughout the course 2015-2016 the initiative will continue to grow with the addition of new locations.
